I think that pop-ups are one of the most intrusive and most irritating things that you can encounter when visiting a web site. I simply dislike it when I click on a link to visit a blog or a web site and even before I get to see what the site has to offer, I am already being bombarded with some one sort of advertisement or another.
I am sure that I am not the only one who feels this way but then again, I am also pretty sure that there are a lot of people who disagree. After all, didn’t John Chow and Jeremy Shoemoney – both blog royalty in their own right – use pop-ups to increase their newsletter subscriptions? Let me correct myself – they are using pop-ups to promote their newsletters. So there must be something right about using pop-ups for your site…
Well for those like me who have an aversion to pop-ups, here is what John Chow said about using pop-ups to the advantage of both the blogger AND the reader:
Adding a Lightbox newsletter sign up box is pretty straight forward. I’ve made a screen cast on how to do it. So far, I’ve gotten a few comments about the sign up form but no real complaints because I set the Lightbox to display only once per visitor. In other words, if you’ve been shown the Lightbox, you’ll never see it again unless you delete your cookies.
I set the Lightbox to display only once per visitor – that right there is the key, I believe. Perhaps I will consider using this in the near future. What about you?

Domain parking companies are probably going to take a hit on this one. Until yesterday, if you had many unused domain names and wanted to monetize them you had only one option: to register an account with some registrar or domain parking company, and let them run the ads on your domains while giving you a (minuscule) share on the earnings per click.
Google had an AdSense product for domains, but only people with huge portfolios could have access to it.
Today they are opening that product up to all publishers, so even if you have 3 domains laying around you will now be able to put AdSense on them.
Do not expect to earn some killer money with this, obviously. Still I am pretty sure it will be more money that what it was possible to make before with the domain parking companies (if nothing else you are taking out the middle man).
If you want to use this feature, you just need to log into your AdSense account and click on the “AdSense Setup” tab, and there should be an “AdSense for domains” option there. Currently it is only available to U.S. AdSense publishers though, but Google should expand it to everyone else soon.

If you log into your WordPress today you will notice a message saying “WordPress 2.7 is available! Please update now.” That is right, version 2.7 is out and you can download it here.
Version 2.7 should be a major upgrade into the WordPress software. Here are some of the changes that it brings:
- new interface to make it easier to perform the admin tasks
- customization options on the admin screens
- the ability to reply to comments from the dashboard
- embed support for comments threading
- drag and drop support on some sections
The most exciting stuff is the automatic upgrade. From now when new versions get released all you will have to do is one click, and the software will take care of the rest. I am sure this will make WordPress a much more secure software, too.
Anyway, here is a video that you can watch to get a glimpse on the new visual.
A big thank you for all the WordPress team and community for making such a big progress happen.
