After the review the owner of a plugin that did a similar thing (and that apparently inspired the Referrer Detector author) contacted me asking me why I had not reviewed his plugin, too.

The answer was pretty simple: I didn’t review his plugin because I didn’t know about it!

The author of the Referrer Dectetor one emailed me with a link to his plugin. I went there to check it out, liked the idea, and wrote a review about it. Once I discovered the other similar plugin it was too late, because covering two plugins that do pretty much the same job would be pointless for my readers.

If you have developed or are developing a cool WordPress plugin and would like to let me know about it, all you have to do is to send me an email via the contact form with a link and a small description. I will at least check it out, and if I like the concept, I might share it with my readers.

Angel Cuala asked:

How would you differentiate the users of SU and Digg? I ask this because SU has been my top referral site in terms of traffic, although I don’t send any of my posts there. I sometimes send my posts to Digg, and I know it is a sin. However, I also submit other bloggers’ posts.

Can I conclude that Digg users prefer news posts, which is not my blog topic? Or basically, Digg users hate me because I submit my posts?

First of all, regarding the difference between Digg and StumbleUpon users, I would say that Digg users are relatively younger and more tech-savvy. The technology niche is undoubtedly the main one on Digg, and while there are many StumbleUpon users that are also tech fans, the overall population of its users is more heterogeneous (i.e. there are also many users that like videos, funny pictures, how-to guides and so on).

Keep in mind that this is what I have observed by using those services, and other people might disagree.

One essential difference between the two services, though, is how they work. Digg has an upcoming section on their website, where users are able to vote the stories up or down. The traffic that you would get from getting listed on the upcoming section alone, however, is not very big, because there are thousands of others being submitted every day.

Should your story receive enough votes to break to the front page (those days this happens at 150 diggs or so, but varies a lot), you would see a huge traffic spike, because virtually all Digg users keep an eye on the stories that go to the front page. It is not uncommon to receive over 100,000 visits in a single day from a Digg front page, in fact.

As you can see, Digg works under a “make or break” situation. Your content either gets enough traction to go popular and hit the front page, sending you a horde of traffic, or it doesn’t, in which case it will join the thousands of other stories that never get enough exposure or traffic.

StumbleUpon, on the other hand, works with a browser toolbar where its users vote the web pages that they see up or down. The higher the number of up votes, the more people will see the page via the Stumble toolbar. The difference here is that it is a continual process, and not a binary one. As a result, you will end up getting some traffic for most of your pages that end up on the StumbleUpon database, even if they don’t receive many up votes. Traffic spikes are also possible with StumbleUpon if a lot of people vote your story up in a short period of time.

Secondly, the StumbleUpon traffic is gradual and can last for a long time. If people keep giving your story or web page an up vote, it will keep showing to Stumble users, sometimes for months after it was first submitted.

On the second part of your question you asked: Can I conclude that Digg users prefer news posts, which is not my blog topic?

News posts tend to perform better on Digg than on StumbleUpon, but I would not conclude that merely from the fact that your posts never got any traffic from Digg. As you can see from my explanation, the cause of that might be the fact that they never got enough traction (i.e. votes) to go forward. Should your blog keep growing its audience, one day it could starting seeing better results with Digg, even if your content style won’t change.

Then you ask said: Digg users hate me because I submit my posts?

I don’t think that is the case either. Digg users would hardly notice if you submit your own blog posts once in a while, especially if they never get close to becoming popular. This is only an issue if you end up submitting each and every new post your publish, regardless of their quality, and if you try to further manipulate the system by asking all your friends to Digg your story even if other Digg users won’t find it worth.

Davide Pozzi runs a popular Italian blog called TagliaErbe. A while ago he sent me some questions via email, and I answered them. He then published the interview on his blog, but in Italian. I asked if he was planning to do anything with the English version, and he said “no.” So I asked him permission to publish it here. He agreed, and below you will find it.

1. After receiving a degree in International Economics and working for a year within a multinational company, you have decided to quit and pursue entrepreneurial projects on the Internet. Why?

First of all because I find working for large corporations boring (maybe Google is the exception that confirms the rule). Hierarchy and internal politics suck. Most of the times on those big companies people are judged by how long they have been around, and not by the quality of their ideas and actions.

I prefer to work in a dynamic environment where people are smart, genuine, and where things happen fast. That is why I started working on the Internet, and haven’t looked back ever since.

The second reason is the fact that I always wanted to have my own business. I firmly believe that there are no secrets or shortcuts to success. It will come from hard work and persistence. If that is the case, I’d rather work my arse off for something that I own and not for someone that pays me by the hour….

Finally, the lifestyle of 9 to 5 jobs is terrible. Having my own online business allows me to take breaks whenever I feel like it. I never wake up to an alarm clock. I train kick-boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu almost daily. In other words, the flexibility you have working for yourself is priceless.

There are down sides too, obviously. I work pretty much all Saturdays and Sundays too. But when you love what you do is doesn’t feel like work at all.

2. You have lived and studied in several places around the world, including Italy, Chile and Brazil… but on your blogs, you write in English. Do you believe that writing in English can help the success of a blog?

There are advantages and disadvantages to writing in English as opposed to your native language. The obvious advantage is the fact that you can reach a much wider audience. The English speaking Internet is very large. On top of that most young people from around the world speak it, too.

The second advantage comes from the fact that most online services are English based. If you have a blog written in Portuguese, for example, you can forget about getting featured on a popular social bookmarking site like Digg or Reddit. Sure there are local alternatives, but they are much smaller.

The disadvantage of choosing to write in English as opposed to your native language is exactly the fact that you will be facing a much bigger and tougher competition. Suppose you want to start a blog about making money with affiliate marketing. If you decide to write it in English, you will be facing the competition of hundreds other blogs that already cover that topic, some of which are very well established. If you decide to write that same blog on your own language and targeting the local affiliate marketing scene, you would have less competition and higher chances of becoming an authority.

Finally, it is also important to consider your English writing skills. You should only consider starting a blog or website in English if you are able to communicate clearly and efficiently on that language. You don’t need to write like Shakespeare, but people must at least understand easily what you are trying to say.

3. You’re a blogger since 2005. In these 3 years, do you think that blogging is changed?

The Internet is changing every day, and blogging is no exception.

One big difference that I notice is that today it is harder to build real relationships. Back in the day you had few blogs covering each niche, so it was possible to get to know and follow all your fellow bloggers. You would read their articles, comment, and they would comment back.

Today you have hundreds, if not thousads of blogs on each and every niche. As a consequence, it becomes much tougher to filter the signal from the noise, and to create bonds with other bloggers.

Information overload is probably a good term to describe it, and we will need to learn how to deal with it.

4. Sketch out your tipical work-day.

I wake up at 6am or so (naturally), take breakfast, and then I turn the computer on. Usually I start working on my projects right away, because I am more productive in the morning. I write an article or two for the blogs, check the websites where I have editors in place to make sure all is going smooth, and so on.

At 8am I check my email and try to clean the inbox in 30 minutes or so. After that I play chess online for 30 minutes or so, and at 9am I get back to work.

Before lunch I have the first training session of the day, which is either Jiu-Jitsu on the gym or just the punch bag on my garage.

After lunch I get back to work with the websites. The tasks vary from day to day. Sometimes I will need to work on the design of some new project, other days I need to manage a PPC campaign and so on.

Late in the afternoon I have the second training session of the day, which is weight lifting or swimming, and then I close shut the computer down at 8pm or so. At 10pm I am in sleeping already.

5. “Content is King”, or there are other important factors?

Content is definitelty kind. But promotion is queen.

So the content must be there, but you need to get people to see it, too.

6. How much money per month you made, on average? do you earn more by selling your services, through banners or through affiliate programs of others?

My blogs make mid four figures from direct ad deals. On top of that I also make money with affiliate programs, sites that run Google AdSense and consulting. I would say that the split is balanced among the different sources.

7. You have 3 blogs in your “mini-network”: Daily Bits, Daily Blog Tips e Daily Writing Tips. Do you think it’s important to “diversify” the sources of income between different sites or blogs?

Definitely. Although you need to diversity at the right time, as to not risk losing the focus on your main projects. One principle to keep in mind is “finish what you start.”

8. Last but not least: tell us the “Daniel Scocco trick” to make a lot of money online with a blog

There are no tricks or shortcuts. Hard work and persistence are the corner stones of any successful project.

Destination Infinity asked:

What is this CSS and why should some one edit it?

CSS is the acronym for Cascading Style Sheets, and it is a language used to style web pages written in HTML and XHTML. In other words, with CSS stylesheets you can specify the colors, spacing, fonts and other design elements for all or some HTML pages inside a website.

CSS was developed to separate the content of the document (i.e. the information itself) from its presentation. This separation is beneficial both for web publishers and for the end user.

For web publishers, it becomes much easier to create tableless designs and to have a consistent look across different pages. Using just HTML, for example, you would need to specify your fonts, colors and spacing on every single page of your website. Imagine if we were talking about hundreds of pages. It would become time consuming to create all of them with the same design elements, and virtually impossible to make quick layout changes after that.

Using CSS, on the other hand, you would specify all your design elements on the stylesheet (usually called style.css), and the browser would refer to that document when displaying your HTML pages to know what color, fonts and spacing it should use.

As a consequence, it becomes much easier to make design changes, too. You would just need to tweak the CSS stylesheet to change a specific element, say the color of your links or the size of the H1 titles, across all your website pages.

The advantage for the end user, on the other hand, comes from the fact that CSS enables the same page to be displayed in different styles. It becomes possible therefore to have a version of your site for people that will access it on a computer monitor and another version for people that want to print it out.

Now the reader also asked about “why one should edit the CSS.” Well, provided you used a CSS based design, you should edit it whenever you want to make changes on your design. Suppose you have a WordPress blog, and you want to increase the size of your font, or perhaps align your logo slightly to the left.
You would need to log into your control panel, then choose “Design,” then “Theme editor.” and then you would need to edit the style.css file.

That is the stylesheet of your blog, and it controls all the design elements. If your theme was coded properly, it should be easy to understand what code is controlling what element, and within minutes you will be able to navigate around. Sometimes you will need to go with trial and error too, but as long as you keep a backup file, there is nothing wrong with that.
